Challenge

Customer had a gate valve for the high-pressure steam turbine bypass isolation valve on the main steam line. This is a critical isolation valve that must maintain shutoff. Despite not being used often, repair was costly and time-consuming, often requiring three days and costing more than the original purchase price. It required hundreds of handwheel turns and took two people 15 minutes to open or close, which delayed sequencing during lock-out tag-out and restart procedures. While a new valve solution would address these issues, any changes would require multiple contractors and management of change documentation, both of which increase the internal resources required to manage and execute the project. The management challenges alone prevented similar improvements from being done during outages in the past.
Solution

Solution

A metal-seated, top-entry ball valve with long-term zero-leakage is much faster to operate. Novaspect was able to provide this solution with a fast lead time to meet the project requirements. The valve can be opened or closed in just a few minutes with one person. Zero-leakage seals limit steam damage and extend the time between repair events. A top-entry ball valve is easier and faster to repair, saving time and money during turnarounds. Together, these features decrease cost of ownership. Novaspect took on the whole scope of product configuration, engineering, fabrication, installation, commissioning, and documentation for a hassle-free, turnkey project executed during the outage with very little impact to other outage activity or site personnel.
